Working From Home: 6 Tips to Navigate This New Normal

With so much going on, working from home might feel like an overwhelming task. Here are some tips to help you stay mentally healthy and focused while working remotely.

In these changing times, we are being called upon to reevaluate and readjust how we live our daily lives to what we now know as the “new normal.” Although many businesses had already implemented flexible work and working from home as an employee perk, it was never a mandatory requirement as it is now. As we adjust to this new way of living, working remotely can begin to feel like a double-edged sword. With so much going on, working from home might feel like an overwhelming task.

Here are some tips to help you stay mentally healthy and focused while working remotely:

Stick to your Morning Routine.

Keeping our sense of routine is important in keeping us on track, both workwise AND psychologically. Get up at your regular time. Get dressed, even if in casual clothing. Whatever you do, don't stay in PJ’s!  Have your breakfast and then start your work day.

Set up a Home Office.

Whatever your space capabilities are, try to arrange an area that is designated just for work. This can allow you to focus while you’re in that area and make it easier to step out of that area and disconnect when the workday is over.

Create an Exercise Routine.

Physical activity helps keep anxiety and depression at bay. With many gyms closed at this time, it’s important to make some time for physical activity. As if you were in your office, maintaining the routine of walking, taking the stairs and breaking for lunch helps maintain a sense of normalcy in your life that will make this process easier.

Avoid Distractions.

Working from home can increase the likelihood of “finding” other things to do. Using a schedule such as your agenda, alarms, etc. to keep you on track and work focused is a must. The temptation to throw in a load of laundry or do the dishes will be there … so how you set up your environment and schedule can make all the difference in keeping you focused.

Connect with your Colleagues.

Staying connected with your colleagues outside of formal video meetings and conferences can actually be helpful during these challenging times. Think of it as a water cooler break or an afternoon coffee break. Use technology purposefully, and as a tool to “just be social” with those you work with.

Remember to Treat Yourself.

During times of extraordinary stress, it is even more important to take a moment to breathe, and to enjoy the present moment.
