What is Mindfulness?

Although mindfulness is a natural process, it’s also a learned skill that requires practice and intentionality, especially in our fast-paced society.

Why Practice Mindfulness?

When we practice mindfulness, we create space for ourselves—space to think, breathe, and listen. This simple act of pausing allows us to find beauty in the moment and reconnect with our surroundings. Here are some tips to help you start your mindfulness practice:

  1. Start Small: Allow yourself 1-5 minutes of sitting quietly. Close your eyes and pay attention to the sounds, sensations, and feelings around you. Begin to slow your breath by inhaling for a count of five, holding for a count of five, and exhaling for a count of five. This rhythmic breathing helps you ease into a more gentle state of awareness.
  2. Mind Wandering is Normal: Your mind will wander, and that’s okay! Gently bring your attention back to the present moment, using your breath or focusing on your posture. The act of noticing when your mind wanders and gently redirecting it is itself a powerful aspect of mindfulness.
  3. Deal with Your Internal Critic: We all have an internal critic—a part of our mind that judges and critiques our actions. During mindfulness, acknowledge the presence of this critic, but let it pass. Return your attention to your breath, your posture, and the present moment.

Incorporating Mindfulness into Daily Life

Mindfulness isn’t just about sitting quietly; it can be woven into your daily routine in various ways:

  • While Eating: Pay attention to what you taste and smell.
  • When Walking: Notice how your feet feel on the ground and how your muscles move.
  • Pause Between Actions: Listen to the phone ring before answering it, or notice how the chair feels beneath you before sitting down.
  • Do What You Love: Engage in activities you enjoy with full attention and focus.
