Above all, be gentle with yourself. This is a process, a journey, one where we will hit detours, some initiated by us, some initiated by others. Detours are part of the journey as well, so enjoy it all, process it all and keep going.
There’s plenty of information about helping us build healthy relationships with our partners and loved ones, but we don’t hear nearly as much about the most important relationship in our lives: the one with ourselves.
This goes beyond taking care of ourselves. It is about becoming aware of and listening to our inner voice. When we allow ourselves to do that, we can gain much insight into who we are: what we like, dislike, where our passions and fears lie. This is similar to the concept of the oxygen mask on airplanes...put it on yourself first before helping others.
There are long term and intensive ways to practice self care, from learning meditation to extensive psychotherapy, and there are also quick and practical strategies to start the journey right away!
Do the basics. We hear this all the time: eat, sleep and move. These are the foundational tasks we all need to do to survive and thrive.
Take solo time. We are part of a “go-go-go” society. Resting is frowned upon and yet it is crucial for resetting our mind, body and soul. Make sure you make some time for yourself whether you stay indoors or go outdoors - you can journal, paint, or literally rest...breathe and be in the present moment.
Look for moments of joy. There are at least 2 sides to every situation. Look for and choose the brighter and lighter ones. When we choose to focus on joy, it creates an emotional reserve for us that can be drawn upon in darker times.
Create time to reflect. Ask yourself daily: How am I feeling? What am I thinking? This daily check in can help you know and recognize yourself better and more deeply. The more that we know our Self, the better and more intentional choices we can make.
Take care of your social Self. Together with the solo time, we also need social interactions. Seek people that will fill you and support you.
Above all, be gentle with yourself. This is a process, a journey, one where we will hit detours, some initiated by us, some initiated by others. Detours are part of the journey as well, so enjoy it all, process it all and keep going.
